Understanding ladder classifications

When choosing a ladder it is important to pick the right ladder for the job. It is quite straight forward to know if you needs a step ladder, extension ladder or roof ladder but choosing a ladder with the appropriate class and strength is a little bit more difficult.

You can break this down into three main classifications

  • BS2037: Class 3 rating
  • BSEN131: Class 2 rating
  • BS203: Class 1 rating

Ladders best for DIY work

Any ladder or access equipment tested to a Class 3 rating is best used for DIY and domestic use. Products in this category have a duty rating of 95kb and a maximum permissible load of 125KG

Ladders best for trade ladders

Any ladder or access equipment testing to a Class 2 rating has been resigned for use in a trade environment, specifically for light trade work. Products in this category have a duty rating of 125kg and a maximum permissible load of 150kg

Ladders for industrial work

Ladders with a class 1 rating have been designed for use in an industrial environment. Products with a class 1 rating has a duty rating of 130kg and a maximum permissible load of 175kg.
